APPLICATIONS
Sealing application technology
Sealing elements are used in a variety of technical constructions. As a rule, they are used to prevent unwanted material transfers (seals) or to control or regulate the flow of material (valves, sealing pistons or balls). However, moving construction elements such as pistons, rotors, slides, etc. also sometimes fulfil sealing functions. Sealing applications are therefore not limited to static operating conditions.
A large number of plastics are particularly suitable for sealing applications due to their high resistance to corrosion and chemicals combined with comparatively good elasticity. Due to their special property profile, certain types also offer a good sealing effect and high functional reliability even under cryogenic operating conditions. However, plastics can also be used well in dynamic sealing applications due to their wear resistance and good sliding properties and offer an outstanding sealing effect.
A significant proportion of the components and systems manufactured by POLYTRON from speciality and high-performance plastics are used in sealing applications. The technical solutions made of plastic are generally used where standard solutions from other manufacturers are no longer sufficient. Recently, the use of speciality and high-performance plastics for sealing applications in the hydrogen sector has increasingly become the focus of application.
Advantages of plastics:
- Outstanding corrosion and chemical resistance
- Good elasticity for reliable sealing
- Excellent sliding properties and wear resistance for dynamic applications
